galactic thoughts

lately at night my thoughts are brought to the big bang, the galaxy as a whole, and how we as a society think we know much more then we really do.

what we can currently see is just a minute section of what is actually out there.

a person
our family
our town
our state / province
our country
our continent
our planet
our solar system
Our Galaxy (The Milky way)
Our Universe
Multiverse?

supposedly this all started with all matter packed extremely dense into on single point.  or one place, before the existence of anything at all.

Lots of people have seen the power point demos, videos, and presentations of just how small we are in the larger sense when you compare our star (The Sun) to other stars, and our Milky way galaxy to other galaxies that we have observed.

All of this smashed into the one place no space, no time... just matter.  often referred to as Time T=0
this suggests we are all here as a result of something out of nothing.

expanding universe theory
cyclicle universe (expanding an contracting)

All of this we think we know from what we have observed and measured. in the stars, through telescopes, etc..

Where I live in Texas the ground swells and shrinks with the seasons and i can easily observe and measure changes that take place in my own backyard.  A simple example of this would be to go sink a stake in the ground at a random spot in the yard and take measurements form a corner of my house.  From this I will find that the measurements will vary, possibly by season, and surely on a yearly time frame.

using this example I can learn a few things. and make some hypotheses from, but rather I like to raise more questions, did the stake move?  did my starting point of my measurement (the corner of the house) move?  Has there been an elevation change?  how much did it rain this month / season / year.

will any of these questions lead me to a true cause of why the stake moved?  most likely it's a combination of the all of the questions I have, and many more....  grass growth can move objects, etc...

The point in all this is that all of the measurement we take of the stars today as well as other objects in the sky that we observe.

The sum of all of this is that we DO NOT KNOW what is out there, and what is happening out there, or the cause of everything we observe today.  No matter how much I measure, observer and find answers to quesitons there will always be something we did not observe, measure, calculate.

Failing

Taking risks and failing is a part of growing and succeeding at whatever you do in life.  Sometimes when I start something new the fear of failing doesn't bother me at all, or it doesn't crop up into my mind, which is a good thing because if you let this fear control your decision to not try you have failed before you even started.

What i'm realizing is that I need to allow myself to fail more often in order to grow and succeed.

You can't define someone as a failure who tries and fails one time at something, most people will fail at there first attempt to accomplish a new task.  This is one of the reasons why I enjoy climbing so much, failure breeds success, it drives you to try again, and again until you are successful.  This is what truly defines a winner, someone who prevails through failure to succeed in the end.

Who Are You?

Sometimes I can loose sight of who I am.

I am not my job.
I am not my hobbies.
I am a father.
A husband.
A human being.

but that is still not who I am.  Maybe someday I will figure it all out, but for now...

I'll just have to be me.

Making connections

Recently I watched this video which is mostly uneventful but you can see the excitement of the artist when he listens to "some random guy"... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFjc1nOHwlc

what interests me the most about this is the randomness of the connection made between two artists (deadmau5) and (Chris James).

Here is the sound cloud link that Chris James Sent to deadmau5 http://soundcloud.com/chrisjamesofficial/deadmau5-theveldt-vocal-mix

Alone the instrumental track is somewhat interesting, it's calm, kind of sad or melancholic in nature, but also repetitive.  The vocals compliment the instrumental track so much it evokes emotional feelings in me.  Maybe it's because I also read the short story by Ray Bradbury (which can be found here http://www.veddma.com/veddma/Veldt.htm) and that as a parent I can relate to the story.

The Veldt

A Short story by Ray Bradbury.

A musical interest I have composed a piece of music inspired by this short story, it's an interesting story and if you've never heard of it you should google it and do some more reading.  To me music is about creating an emotion, a feeling that the audience might get while listening, or it can be about conveying an idea or thought

Happy life, full of machines all around the room.
look what they made, they made it for me, happy technology.
So in love with the way we are, here.

Climbing indoors and building some holds of my own.

I've been doing some indoor rock climbing lately and really enjoying the challenges both physically and mentally that present themselves while pursing this new(ish) hobby.  One of the things that has intrigued me lately is the quality and types of holds that I haven encountered while climbing indoors.

Based on my limited experience I plan on making some climbing holds of my own first with some Resin based holds and foam shaped originals to give to my local gym.  Its kind of an experiment to see if I can create something that route setters will find fun to use and possibly give them some options they might not have had while route setting previously.

If I'm not too lazy i'll try to take some pictures of different stages of the process to  post here at a later date, for now I'm working in my mind and on paper conceptualizing some thoughts and ideas to start to shape this weekend hopefully.

later.

Keeping life interesting

What is it that we strive for as human beings?  People enjoy accomplishing things and being able to say, yeah I did that...  but what lies behind that basic human instinct to push ourselves?  Is it our competitive nature, the yearning for new adventures, or is it something more deeper then that?

recently I've picked up rock climbing at an indoor gym with my son, we go, do some climbs and I often think i'm pushing my son too much to climb harder grades then he believes he is capable of accomplishing.  sometimes it's a struggle to get him to try a harder climb, i think his lack of interest in trying it is the sense of failure.  we sometimes don't do things because we don't want to fail at it.  Much like when you are young you don't ask out that girl because you don't think you have a chance, or that you don't want to get rejected.  I believe the same thing happens in every other aspect of life, people don't try new or harder things because of the fear of failure.

the funny thing is even when we expect the worse and do fail there is always a sense of success when we try at those things, for example while climbing on Sunday we've climbed a bunch of 5.9 routes successfully and failed at some 5.10 routes that are just out of our technical know how and ability right now.  But there is a 5.8 climb at the gym we go to that appears daunting, two good overhanging ledges.  This route isn't technically difficult, however it is mentally and physically demanding to be able to get over these two overhangs.  I gave it a go myself and almost got above the second overhang but yet failed.  After my go at it, I convinced my son to give it a go and he did better then he expected and even had a look of satisfaction on his face that he accomplished something.  That feeling of accomplishment is great, it will lead him to believe that he CAN do it and give it another try the next time that we go.

procrastination

sometimes I disgust myself with my own laziness. I hate procrastinating.

If only we could wage a war against poverty, then there would be LOTS of money thrown to it's cause.

according to http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/02/osama-bin-laden-dead-war-on-terror-costs_n_856390.html the US has spent 1.28 trillion dollars on the war on terror from 9/11/2001 till the death of Osama Bin Laden.

the current US population is around 307 million.

based on these numbers alone we have spent 4,169 dollars per person in the US on the war on Terror. what would happen if we gave the 1.27 trillion dollars spent on the war to people living in poverty.

according to wikipedia the current percentage of the US population living in poverty is 15% that is a bit more then 46,000,000 million people living under the poverty level in the US alone!

those numbers are STAGGERING! so if we hadn't spent the 1.28 trillion dollars on the war on terror we could have instead given that money to people living in poverty almost 28,000 dollars per person. What would that amount mean to an individual living in poverty? what would it mean to you?

So where did that money come from in the first place? The answer to that question is not clear cut, but some research will show that it came from taxes being paid, existing federal programs being cut of funds it used to get, and the list goes on.

What other money is the federal government spending on "wars"? we also have the war on drugs that is an active, ongoing, on NON-winnable war. according to http://www.drugsense.org/cms/wodclock we spent over 15 billion dollars on this war in the year 2010 alone! if we look at money spent on it from when this war was started we have spent untold amounts. These efforts began over 3 decades ago!

here is a basic timeline on the war on Drugs http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/drugs/cron/

Just thoughts i've had this morning.

Life begins again.

If The world were to face a cataclysmic event that caused the vast majority of humans to die and you were a survivor what would you do? Who would you be?

if you knew or believed that the end was coming how would you prepare in the event that you lived through it?

would you buy guns and ammo?
would you invest time in learning how to grow crops / plants to eat?

In most things you learn at the beginning, whether you are learning about math, horticulture, or martial arts, the basis for your learning is the roots or basics of the topic.

What are our roots the will help us grow? love, patience, tolerance, peace?

would you look to the heavens and ask why and do nothing?

physics, black holes and the like.

God is everything or nothing, some what say that God is both everything and nothing at the same time. In mathematical representation then we would say on or both of these can be true based on your experience.

God = 0
God = ∞

So in terms of Einsteins theories we would say that we know the following about gravity.

Gravity is what holds us to the earth, what holds the planets in orbit, what causes galaxy's to move around super black holes, along with stellar black holes to orbit around them. simply put Gravity states that an object with larger mass attracts objects of smaller mass

Singularity = The quality or condition of being singular.

the point at which a black hole attracts all matter is referred to as a singularity.

Big bang theory says that everything was created out of nothing, or rather that a singularity "exploaded" causing the universe and eveything in, and around it to expand, going faster the farther away from the origin it gets.

multiple singularities? if a singularity is the quality of being singular why do we think that there can by multiple copies of this? are we unable to adiquately define what's at the center of a black hole?

so we think that everything started with a bang, flinging crap outward from the center speeding up as it gets farther away. Then we have black holes which are so massive that they attract everything, stars, planets, all matter towards it's center, and at the heart of the black hole is nothing. Oh yeah, also we can't see them...

if at the center of the milky way galaxy there is a super massive black hole keeping all the stars dancing about the center of the black hole that *should* be attracting everything in the universe torwards it's center if it's the most massive thing according to einstiens theories.

but that isn't happening either.

could it be that the way we are observing these stellar phenomena just cannot accurately describe what is going on?

So, how does God fit into all this? Some believe that we are able to make contact with God and have a relationship with him. If God is everything and nothing then how we perceive the stellar activities or cellular level of activities is of no consequence.

What does the man that spends his entire life focused on such things percieve himself at the end of his life? Does his scientific success fulfill him? if the God particle or Higgs Boson is found what will it tell us about ourselves? I don't think there is any scientific breakthrough that will change the relationships I have with those around me. Whether you view the earth as flat or spherical does not matter in my opinion.

Like the business man that is only focused on bringing home wealth and fortune for himself and his family that he wastes his life trying to acquire it all forgetting that his family just wants a hug today.

sometimes I think, someitimes i feel, others I weep and yet more I seek.

But the question remains, what will I find?

Will it be what I was looking for?

what? what did you say to me?

work to pay for my house
work to pay for property taxes
work to pay for food
work to pay for comforts
work to pay for pleasure
work to pay for pain
work to pay for a car
work to pay for ...

trade turned to pay when everyone wanted shiny gold. why did gold become so popular, and why did we start to use it to "trade" for stuff?

the farmer bartered his crops for meat, the rancher bartered his cattle for the result of the farmers crops.

what was life like before there was a struggle for freedom or power?\

what we have today is just the appearance of freedom.

you ever read something but not have a clue of what you just read?

you ever feel like you can't do something because the result won't be good enough?

Crazy law in 12 states

there are 12 states that have laws that state that you are NOT allowed to record police without their consent. who is this law in place to protect?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBwQyg9CjnI

5 counts of ease dropping for a total of 75 years?

the state law allows police to record citizens without consent.

what do you think? Do you think that you have nothing to fear if you aren't doing anything wrong? Do you think this violates your rights?

Hi, can we be friends

I've learned that even though I sometimes think i'm not good enough for anybody, others sometimes see me as being an arrogant cocky ass...

which is more true? my perception of myself, or others perception of me?

does this mean i'm a self loathing nothing, and at the same time an arrogant prick?

probably not, but i'm sure i'm somewhere in between those two extremes.

Perceived truth

A young man that has just started his family has a small farm with one horse. One day the horse runs away and the man sadly cries, God why did you take my horse from me, I need him to help plow the fields, and to get to town. The Next day the man’s Horse comes back with another Horse and the man happily cheers to God, thank you lord for providing me with another horse. On the third day while the man tries to break the wild horse he is thrown from it and breaks his leg, and again the man cries out, God why do you hate me so to let this happen to me? the next day a great war has begun and all the young men are called to duty, except the injured, old, and sick…

The man sees his horse as leaving as bad, but then something good comes from it.

The man sees the the new horse as being good, then his mind / or his perception of what is true changes when he breaks his leg, and once again his truth changes when they come needing young healthy men for war.

The point of this is that the events that are perceived as good and bad or truly neither, or both depending on how and when you precieve them.

When the horse is gone it seems bad, when it returns with another horse it seems good, etc…

the truth of a situation, experience or action can never be truly known...

Questions and thoughts today.

Observe good faith and justice towards all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all. "George W."

this is a quote from a past leader of the united states. think about this for a minute, pause and close your eyes. Imagine how we americans would be viewed if our foriegn policy matched what this statement says. you reap what you sew, therefore if you cultivate peace and harmony you shall reap it.

Fear is what is our driver today, not only in our foreign policies, but in the average americans lives. People fear their employers, fear their neighbors.

Mistake "An action or judgment that is misguided or wrong"

people who do not learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them. Is the war on terror a mistake, did we take action that was misguided or wrong? these are big, huge, even monstrous questions, when people live in fear, their thoughts and decisions are based on the fear they live in. The attack on September 11, 2001 was but a tiny blip in the sense of catastrophe seen around the world, whether natural or man made.

the country I live in today is full of Pride and ego, we believe we are RIGHT, we know what is best for others, so we want to 'help' others to live better, like we do. \

What can you control?
what can we control?
who are 'we'?

some say that the Questions that get asked of you in AA are not to be answered, but rather they are to be experienced. hmm. Can you stop an think, rather then answer a question?

miracle vs accomplishment
miracle is by the hand of God
accomplishment is something you achieved by work.
